Break Da House DJ Profile - Dr Fish
DJ Name:
Dr Fish.
Music style:
- Club – Techfunk, Bassline & Tearout breaks. Dubstep & Electro.
- Backroom – Funk, Soul, Hip Hop, Big Beat, Party breaks & Electro.
Influences:
I first got into DJing back in late 90s through the discovery of Trance and Techno. Big influences at the time were DJs such Oakenfold, Jon The Dentist, and Billy Nasty. By the end of the 90’s I grew bored of mixing 4:4 beats, and lost the love for the music which had become increasingly commercialised. It was around 2001 when I first heard DJ Yoda and 2 many DJs. It was these guys that were probably the biggest influence for me. 2 many DJs showed me it was possible to mash up different genres of music together, and Yoda showed me (as well as the rest of the world) that it’s possible to inject comedy into DJing. It was hearing Yoda scratch that also inspired me to take up turntablism. From then on I started mixing up everything and anything that took my liking, from funk and hip-hop to big-beat, breaks, and electro. A lot of DJs have influenced me since, but I guess it’s the DJ’s that stand out as being different to the norm’ that inspire me most. Originality is the key. For example ‘A Skillz’ for his turntablist approach to mixing breaks, ‘Food & DK’ for their ability to cross genres seamlessly, and ‘Elite Force’ for his presence behind the decks to name a few.

Bio:
I started playing out in 2004 when I was offered my first residency in the South West of France during a summer living as a surf bum. I ended up staying in France for the next three years, surfing in the summer, snowboarding in the winters, and playing sets at a wide variety of bars, clubs, and snowboard competitions. I came back to the UK in 2007, and managed to gain recognition as a DJ through competing in the 2007 D Joust competition. From over 400 entrants I went on to win, beating some established DJs en route. Since then I've been lucky enough to play at some awesome nights and venues across the country, and now live in Bristol where I play the majority of my gigs. I also host my own bi weekly radio show called 'Shire Rats Radio' on 2007 Breakspoll nominated Brap.FM. As well as playing on the show myself, it features regular guest mixes from established DJs, and acts as a platform for upcoming DJs from the South West to get themselves heard.
Plans for next 12 months:
To continue learning more about production and get some bad ass tunes up together. I'd like to play a festival or two in 2009, as well as playing more club nights around the country. To set up a little European tour, travelling down through France, Spain, and Portugal playing gigs and surfing. To launch a Break Da House night in Bristol. To raise the profile of 'Shire Rats Radio' and expand our number of regular listeners.
